Korean Concert Etiquette — The Unwritten Rules Locals Follow
Korean concert etiquette isn’t hard, and there’s really only one principle behind all of it: your enjoyment shouldn’t block the person next to you. But a few specifics catch first-timers — and foreign fans especially — off guard. Here’s what locals do without thinking.
Filming
- Rules differ by show. Some concerts ban filming entirely; others allow it only for certain songs (like the encore). The entry signage and in-venue announcements are the standard.
- Even when it’s allowed, flash off — and holding your phone up over your head for a whole song is the classic way to ruin the view for everyone behind you.
- Getting caught filming a no-filming show can get you removed.
Lightsticks and cheering
- Hold the lightstick at chest-to-shoulder height. Stretched overhead, it blocks entire rows behind you.
- Shouting and sing-alongs are part of the show — but during a quiet ballad bridge, or while the artist is talking, locals hold back. That restraint is the culture.
- Some fandoms have set chants. Not knowing them is fine — just follow the people around you.
Seats and moving around
- In seated shows, keep mid-song movement to a minimum. Go to the bathroom between songs or during the talking breaks.
- Don’t kick or grab the seat in front to stand up. Even at shows where everyone stands, blocking an aisle gets you a word from the safety staff.
- Big hats or hair accessories that block the view come off — it’s a courtesy to the row behind.
The rest
- Bathroom before entry. At big venues both the entry line and the bathroom line are long. Arrive early.
- Trash — wrappers and cups go in the bins. Leaving trash on your seat after the show is the most visible bad manner there is.
- Perfume — strong scent is a burden in a packed indoor hall.
